Pipilotti Rist

Pipilotti Rist is a Swiss artist and a pioneer of video art, spatial projection and immersive installation. Since the mid-1980s, she has transformed moving images into environments that surround the body rather than remaining confined to a screen.

Born in Grabs, Switzerland, in 1962, Rist combines saturated colour, music, enlarged fragments of the body, plants, domestic objects and altered perspectives. Her installations can initially appear playful and seductive, yet their visual pleasure often conceals more unstable questions about female identity, desire, violence, nature and technological perception.

In early works such as I’m Not the Girl Who Misses Much, the distorted image and accelerated soundtrack turn the female body into something simultaneously comic, vulnerable and resistant. In Ever Is Over All, a woman walks along a city street casually smashing car windows with a flower-shaped object. Beauty and aggression occupy the same gesture.

Large-scale installations including Pour Your Body Out (7354 Cubic Meters) expanded this language into museum architecture. Floors, walls and ceilings become part of a fluid visual field in which the visitor no longer stands outside the image. Rist helped establish this immersive grammar long before projection became a standard instrument of cultural entertainment.

Her work therefore raises a particularly urgent question: can immersion still disrupt perception after museums, advertising, wellness environments and social media have learned to reproduce its surfaces? Rist’s importance lies in the fact that her installations do not treat pleasure as intellectually suspect. Instead, they make seduction unstable, bodily and politically ambiguous.
