Womanhouse

Womanhouse was the landmark feminist art environment created in Los Angeles in 1972 by Judy Chicago, Miriam Schapiro and students from the Feminist Art Program at CalArts. A dilapidated Hollywood house was transformed into a collective installation in which kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and domestic objects became artistic material.

Through installations and performances addressing marriage, housework, menstruation, sexuality, motherhood and confinement, Womanhouse challenged the division between private experience and public culture. This archive explores its artists, artworks and continuing influence on feminist art, installation, performance and debates about domestic labour, gender and institutional power.
