Read MoreRobin Tewes is a New York painter, educator, and feminist artist whose work explores the psychological and political tensions hidden within everyday life. Her realistic domestic interiors are often inhabited by silence, absence, fragmented conversations, and words written directly onto walls and objects. Through these apparently familiar spaces, Tewes examines family relationships, gender expectations, violence, memory, and the experiences that remain unspoken inside private life.
Alongside her independent career as a painter, Tewes was a historic member of the Guerrilla Girls, working anonymously under the name Alice Neel. As part of the collective, she helped challenge sexism, racism, and institutional exclusion in museums, galleries, and the art market through posters, statistics, public actions, and sharp visual humor.
In my interview, Tewes publicly connected her face and individual artistic history to the Guerrilla Girl previously known only as Alice Neel. The intention was not to turn anonymity into a sensational revelation, but to document and historicize the artists who helped create one of the most influential feminist movements in contemporary art. Recognizing Robin Tewes as both a painter and an activist makes it possible to understand how her personal practice and collective militancy developed as two distinct but closely connected forms of resistance.
