Pier Paolo Calzolari

Pier Paolo Calzolari (Bologna, 1943) turns sculpture into a sensory event governed by temperature, time, light and decay. Associated with Arte Povera since the late 1960s, he introduced frost, ice, salt, lead, tobacco, moss, fire, felt and neon into works that never settle into a permanent state. Refrigeration systems slowly cover metal with white crystals, making transformation both visible and audible.

This archive gathers articles, exhibitions and critical readings of Calzolari’s work, from La casa ideale, the Gesti and Oroscopo come progetto della mia vita to L’aria vibra del ronzio degli insetti. Moving between installation, performance and painting, he combines physical processes with language that often approaches incantation. His materials may be humble, but their effects are luminous and almost sacred. Rather than illustrating poetry, Calzolari forces it to happen materially. Beauty becomes a temporary condition that must be continuously produced and may always disappear.
