Oliver Laric

Oliver Laric is an Austrian artist born in Innsbruck in 1981 and based in Berlin. Working across sculpture, video and internet-based projects, he examines how images and objects change through copying, circulation and reinterpretation. His practice challenges the idea that an artwork can exist as a single, stable original.

In the ongoing project Versions, Laric connects contemporary remix culture with a much longer history of reproduction and appropriation. Roman copies, altered photographs, animated GIFs and manipulated media reveal that images have always acquired meaning through repetition. Digital culture accelerates this process, but it did not invent it.

Laric has also collaborated with museums to produce three-dimensional scans of historical sculptures. He makes many of these files freely available for downloading, alteration and printing. The museum object stops being a final destination and becomes a reusable source file. This tag brings together articles, exhibitions and critical perspectives on Oliver Laric’s artistic practice.
