Lauren Christiansen

Lauren Christiansen is an American artist and curator associated with the early development of post-internet art. In 2009, she co-founded The Jogging with Brad Troemel. The Tumblr project did not treat the internet as a separate exhibition space. It examined how networks reshape artistic production, display and reception.

Christiansen helped create a fast, collaborative model that challenged the slow rhythms and selective logic of galleries. Contributors posted digitally composed images, temporary sculptures and absurd arrangements of ordinary objects. Some works existed physically only long enough for someone to photograph them. Others never left the screen. Gallery-style captions gave these unstable images the appearance of documented artworks.

For An Immaterial Survey of Our Peers, Christiansen and Troemel invited artists to submit images. They placed these works inside photographs of an empty gallery before projecting the results onto its actual walls. This archive gathers articles, exhibitions and critical views on Christiansen’s contribution to online art. Her practice shifted attention from stable objects towards the conditions through which images become visible. In this model, documentation does not follow the artwork. It can create the exhibition, determine its audience and become the work itself.
