Amalia Ulman

Amalia Ulman (born 1989 in Buenos Aires) is an Argentine-Spanish artist, filmmaker and writer based in New York. Her practice moves across performance, social media, photography, installation, video and cinema. She examines how class, gender and consumer culture shape identity and social behaviour. Ulman often uses fiction to reveal how easily familiar images acquire the appearance of personal truth.

In 2014, Excellences & Perfections unfolded as a scripted performance through Ulman’s Instagram account. She staged ambition, sexualisation, breakdown and recovery through recognisable ideals of online femininity. Followers often interpreted the fictional narrative as a sincere record of her life. Their responses became part of the work. The later performance Privilege used an office setting, staged pregnancy and political absurdity to examine respectability, aspiration and social power.

Ulman expanded these concerns into cinema with El Planeta and Magic Farm. Both films use comedy, performance and unstable appearances to explore class difference, cultural imitation and economic insecurity. This archive gathers articles, exhibitions and critical views on Ulman’s work. Her practice shows that online identity is never simply false or authentic. Platforms reward recognisable performances, while audiences help transform those performances into social reality. Ulman asks who gains trust, sympathy and visibility by performing the right version of the self.
